Brathay Windermere Marathon Fun Day | 19 May 2013

The Brathay Windermere Marathon and Family Fun Day provides an opportunity for visitors and the local community to enjoy the picturesque Brathay Hall Estate in Ambleside. The events take place on Sunday 19th May 2013 with the marathon beginning at 10:30am. The route takes the main road to Hawkshead and runs through the centre of the village, which is a great vantage point to watch the runners passing through. Or cheer the runners as they cross the finish line on the front lawn of Brathay Hall on the shores of Lake Windermere. Look out for the 15 runners in distinctive running vests completing their 10th marathon in 10 days, and setting world records as they do so.

The marathon is a fundraising event in support of the Brathay Hall Trust, which is a charity that transforms the lives of children and young people by providing residential and community based programmes. This is the UK's most picturesque marathon route with the course taking one circuit of Lake Windermere, the largest of the lakes in the Lake District, with fantastic views of the lake, woodland and surrounding fells. The route runs anti-clockwise around Lake Windermere, passing through Hawkshead, Newby Bridge, Bowness-on-Windermere and Ambleside. There will be road closures on the B5286 and the C5022 roads from 10am.

In association with the marathon there will be a Free Family Fun Day on the Brathay Hall Estate from 11am to 4pm with a wide range of activities and games suitable for children of all ages. These include canoeing, high ropes course and mini-races. A jazz band, BBQ, tea & refreshments and beer tent are among the entertainment on offer. Or just bring a picnic and relax! Disabled facilities will be available. All proceeds from the Family Fun Day will go towards improving the lives of vulnerable and disadvantaged young people. Please follow signs and directions for car parking. Entrance to the Family Fun Day is free but there is a £5 charge for parking. Or Family Fun Day visitors and spectators may prefer to park in Ambleside and enjoy the 15 to 20 minutes walk to the Brathay Estate.
